Parks and green spaces

Knowsley Offer logo

Knowsley is home to some of the best open spaces on Merseyside. With a variety of formal parks, gardens, woodlands, natural spaces, sports areas and playgrounds, as well as numerous Green Flag award-winning sites, there’s something for everyone.

There’s also a variety of exciting play spaces, including all weather pitches, natural play spaces and 15 ‘work out’ green gyms.

No matter where you live in the borough there is good quality open and green spaces on your doorstep with a range of opportunities to get more involved in your local park with active Friends Groups and an annual calendar or events and activities.

And remember, all of Knowsley’s parks are absolutely FREE to use and access.

You can find the full list of parks and green spaces on the Council’s website, including the facilities available at each site.

A number of new housing developments in the Borough are also bringing improvements to parks and green spaces.

A new country park for Knowsley is progressing as part of the Halsnead Garden Village Development. Plans have been approved for the new 28 hectare country park on the site of the former Cronton Colliery which includes the creation of a sculptured landscape, with a series of multi-user routes, including crossings over a newly created wetland area. The park will also feature a visitor centre with reception, café, education space, ranger officers and an outdoor terrace area, construction of an outdoor classroom canopy and a sky room.

The country park will be supported by a car park, with vehicle access from Cronton Road. Walking and cycling routes will also link to the country park.

The country park will form part of Halsnead Garden Village, one of first nationwide locations to be awarded garden village status by the Government in 2017. As well as the country park Halsnead Garden Village will incorporate 1,600 homes and at least 22.5ha of employment land, together with new education and health provision and 33 hectares of strategic greenspace.

Over in Halewood, 1,305 new homes will be created and as part of the plans, £1m has been pledged to support, enhance and maintain Finch Woods. Funding has also been secured to improve outdoor sports provision in the area too.

A range of events and activities are on offer across all Knowsley’s parks and green spaces. From Nordic Walking to kids’ activities during the school holidays, there is lots to enjoy.

Make sure you check your local park’s noticeboard for information on events. Follow Knowsley Parks on Facebook, or @knowsleyparks on Twitter. You can also visit the Council website for event information.

If you’re looking to organise an event in one of the Borough’s parks, please review the Organised Public Events Guidance.

Parks and green spaces are great places to get active with miles of attractive walking and cycling paths.

Why not get out and explore or join the Green Space Rangers at a walking, cycling or conservation group in a park near you?

Many of our parks have active Friends of Parks and Community Volunteering Groups who are out and about in our parks doing everything from litter picking to managing conservation projects.

These groups can call on the support of the Council but also work independently and are able to bid for funding to make improvements or run events in their local park.
